LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed the appointment of former South Africa’s Michael Smith as the batting coach of Pakistan men’s team. The 46-year-old will work across formats on a two-year term, joining the squad ahead of the three-match Test series against England starting on August 19.
Smith enjoyed a decade-long professional career between 2003 and 2013, featuring in 89 first-class matches, 72 List-A matches, and 16 T20 matches. A right-handed batter, he accumulated 7,029 runs across formats, including nine centuries and 40 half-centuries. Holding a Level 4 coaching qualification, Smith brings extensive coaching experience. He has served on the staff of three HBL PSL franchises — Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and Multan Sultans — and has also worked internationally as batting coach with Australia’s Hobart Hurricanes and Cricket Tasmania. Additionally, he has contributed as a coaching consultant with South Africa’s KZN Inland and Eastern Province.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the PCB to strengthen Pakistan’s batting unit, providing players with specialized guidance and international expertise ahead of a demanding series against England.
