Fayyaz Ahmed, an employee of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and son of senior journalist Sohail Sangi, has gone missing in Karachi.
According to the family, Fayyaz Ahmed left his workplace at around 6pm on Monday in his white Suzuki Alto (registration number BXX-976). Shortly after leaving the office, his mobile phone became unreachable. Since then, no contact has been established with him, and there has been no trace of his whereabouts.
Speaking to The News, Sohail Sangi, the father of Fayyaz Ahmed, a senior journalist and member of the governing body of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), said Fayyaz left his Nadra office at Ayesha Manzil, where he works as an assistant director, at around 6pm on Monday, as per his usual routine. However, he never arrived home.
When Fayyaz, a father of three children, failed to return, family members repeatedly tried to contact him on his mobile phone, but it remained switched off. They then contacted his colleagues, who told them that Fayyaz had left the office as usual for his home in Saddar. The family subsequently began searching for him on their own. When he still had not returned by the following morning, they submitted applications regarding his disappearance to the Sindh inspector general of police, the DIG West and the SSP Central.
According to Sohail Sangi, neither Fayyaz Ahmed nor any member of the family has any personal enmity or financial dispute with anyone. He added that the police have so far made no major breakthrough in the investigation.
Meanwhile, when contacted by The News, DIG West Irfan Baloch said that the investigation into Fayyaz Ahmed’s disappearance is ongoing and that progress is being made in the case. The HRCP also expressed deep concern over Fayyaz’s disappearance. In a statement, the commission said Fayyaz, a Nadra officer and son of HRCP Council member Sohail Sangi, had been missing since Monday. It called on the Sindh government to expedite efforts to ensure his safe recovery.
Karachi Press Club (KPC) President Fazil Jamili, Secretary Aslam Khan, and members of the Governing Body have expressed grave concern over the mysterious disappearance of Fayyaz Ahmed, the son of senior journalist and KPC member Sohail Sangi and the brother of KPC member Riaz Sohail. They have called on the federal interior minister, the Sindh chief minister, the IGP, the additional IG Karachi, and other relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure his immediate and safe recovery.
In a statement issued by the KPC, the office-bearers said the sudden disappearance of a government officer after leaving his workplace is an extremely serious matter that requires an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation. They said that if any individual or group is found to be involved, those responsible should be arrested without delay and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The KPC leadership stressed that protecting the lives and property of citizens, particularly journalists and their families, is the state’s fundamental responsibility. They warned that incidents of this nature create a sense of insecurity in society and urged the relevant authorities to treat the case as a priority and ensure Fayyaz Ahmed’s safe recovery.
The KPC further warned that if Fayyaz Ahmed is not recovered safely and without delay, the journalist community, after consultations, will announce its future course of action.
