Two workers died and four others fell unconscious after toxic fumes from an LPG-powered generator filled a room in Bhittai Colony, Korangi Crossing, on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at a house in Bhittai Colony within the jurisdiction of the Zaman Town police station. Six workers were asleep inside the house when fumes from the generator spread through the room, causing them to lose consciousness. They were rushed to a nearby hospital.
Hospital officials said two of the victims were in critical condition and succumbed to their injuries despite doctors’ efforts to save them. The deceased were identified as 18-year-old Nadeem and 18-year-old Waqas.
The other affected workers were identified as Dilbar, Ameen, Ubaid and Faizan. Police said most of the workers belonged to Nawabshah, while one was a resident of Hyderabad. Zaman Town SHO Ayaz Khan said the victims were employed at Babu Pathan Chapli Kebab. He said electricity supply to the area was suspended at around 7am, prompting the workers to switch on an LPG-powered generator before going back to sleep.
At around 10am, a man identified as Abid entered the house to retrieve his motorcycle and found all six workers unconscious. They were immediately shifted to hospital, where two later died.
A local resident, Ali Haider, who witnessed the aftermath, said the workers were staying in a nearby quarter. He said a power outage occurred early in the morning, after which the workers started the generator and returned to sleep. Fellow workers later found them unconscious and rushed them to hospital. Police sealed the restaurant where the victims were employed.
