MIRPUR (AJK): Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s former president Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan has urged the Chief Election Commissioner to postpone the general elections scheduled for July 27, citing the prevailing law and order situation across various parts of the region.
In a letter addressed to the CEC on Monday, Sardar Yaqoob Khan expressed serious concerns over what he described as a deteriorating security situation in several parts of AJK. He said that in prevailing circumstances, conducting of free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections was impossible.
He further warned that such conditions could adversely affect citizens’ ability to exercise their democratic right to vote freely and without fear.Referring to Article 50(7) of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Interim Constitution, 1974, and relevant provisions of the AJK Election Act, 2020, Sardar Yaqoob Khan emphasised that it is the constitutional and legal responsibility of the EC to ensure that elections are conducted with integrity, transparency, and fairness in an environment where voters and candidates can participate without intimidation or security concerns.
