Three people were injured after unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade at an under-construction Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) office in Karachi’s Lyari area on Tuesday, police said.
The attack occurred near a mosque in Phulpati Lane in the Baghdadi area, where the powerful explosion triggered panic among residents. Police, Rangers and bomb disposal personnel rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area.
The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi by Edhi ambulance. They were identified as Abdul Baqi, 48, Hussain, 50, and Ghulam Mustafa, 32. DIG South Asad Raza said the grenade was thrown at an under-construction building belonging to the Jamaat-e-Islami. According to eyewitnesses, a man riding a motorcycle hurled the explosive before fleeing.
Police said investigators were examining the incident from multiple angles and collecting forensic evidence from the scene. The bomb disposal squad was also called in to assist with the investigation.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Munem Zafar Khan strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act. He alleged that party workers had been receiving threats and said such attacks would not deter the party’s Haq Do Lyari Ko campaign or its Badal Do Nizam movement.
