Karachi: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Monday called for greater collaboration with the construction sector, saying the support of builders and developers is essential for the city’s development and infrastructure modernisation.
The remarks came during a meeting with a delegation of the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD), led by its Chairman Hassan Bakhshi, at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) headquarters.
The participants discussed ongoing development projects, the construction sector, urban infrastructure and areas of mutual cooperation. “The construction industry is the backbone of the country’s economy and provides employment to millions of people,” Wahab said.
He said the Sindh government and the KMC were working to improve Karachi’s infrastructure and civic services with the aim of transforming the city into a modern and well-developed metropolis. The mayor said the KMC also plans to modernise the development model of informal settlements (katchi abadis) and stressed that ABAD’s cooperation would be crucial to achieving this objective.
He expressed hope that the public and private sectors would work together on projects aimed at providing better housing and improved basic services for residents. Addressing the city’s traffic challenges, Wahab said congestion remains one of Karachi’s most pressing issues and that multiple initiatives are underway to address the problem. He said the KMC is also considering establishing modern parking plazas at various locations to reduce traffic congestion and improve parking facilities across the city.
The ABAD delegation appreciated the development initiatives undertaken by the KMC and assured the mayor of its full cooperation in efforts to promote Karachi’s development and urban improvement.
