Wajid Jawad has been re-elected as the Anjuman Taraqqi-e-Urdu Pakistan president for a three-year term.
The election took place in the General Council meeting of the Anjuman, which also unanimously approved multiple amendments to the organisation’s constitution. A new executive council was elected on the occasion for three years.
The General Council meeting was held at the Urdu Bagh and attended by a majority of members. Syed Hassan Abbas proposed amendments to the current constitution of the Anjuman and briefed the participants about them.
The General Council unanimously approved the amendments. Acting General Secretary and Editor of Qaumi Zaban Prof Dr Yasmin Sultana Farooqi presented a detailed performance report of the past years to the members.
She said several special editions of the monthly Qaumi Zaban dedicated to eminent personalities had been published under the Anjuman, along with publication of various books. She informed the gathering that prominent national and international literary figures, scholars, poets, poetesses, and writers had visited the Urdu Bagh and the organisation had also signed memorandums of understanding with various national and international institutions for the promotion of Urdu.
Jawad gave a detailed briefing on the Anjuman’s flagship project ‘Text-to-Voice OCR’. He apprised the General Council about its significance and practical utility and explained that the project had been developed in collaboration with the NED University.
A large number of participants re-elected Jawad as the president of the Anjuman for a three-year term. Dr Yasmin was elected as the general secretary, Ali Khurram Zaidi as the treasurer, Abbas as the joint secretary, and Zahida Hina and Abdul Bari Farangi Mahli (Bari Mian) as special advisers.
Asif Aziz Zubairi, Saeed AllaWala, Firasat Rizvi, Sabeeh Rehmani, Shahid Anwar Tata, Dr Anwar Ahmad, Dr Najeeb Jamal, Kasim M Kasuri, Dr Fasih-ud-Din and Dr Agha Nasir were elected unopposed as members of the Executive Council.
