Punjab’s biogas push gathers pace

LAHORE: Punjab’s efforts to tap its vast livestock resources for renewable energy have gained significant momentum, with Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited expressing keen interest in establishing five commercial scale biogas plants across the province, in what officials described as a major vote of confidence in the provincial government’s clean energy policies and investment-friendly regulatory framework.

The development came during a high-level meeting held between Punjab Energy Secretary Ajmal Bhatti and the managing director of Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited to explore opportunities for expanding the province’s emerging bioenergy sector. The meeting was chaired by the secretary of the Punjab Energy Department.

According to official sources, the Japanese automobile manufacturer’s local subsidiary expressed its willingness to undertake private investment for setting up five commercial-scale biogas plants at suitable locations across Punjab. The proposed investment is expected to complement the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to develop alternative and indigenous energy resources while encouraging greater private sector participation in the renewable energy sector.

Officials said the company’s interest reflected growing confidence among domestic and international investors in Punjab’s policy direction aimed at accelerating renewable energy deployment and creating an enabling environment for sustainable industrial investment.

The latest development follows the successful establishment of Punjab’s first commercial-scale biogas plant in Lahore by the provincial government, a landmark initiative that converts livestock waste into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). The facility is regarded as a pilot project for developing a modern bioenergy industry capable of transforming organic waste into commercially viable clean fuel while addressing environmental concerns associated with unmanaged livestock waste.

Punjab possesses enormous potential for biogas production owing to its dominant livestock sector. As Pakistan’s largest livestock producing province, Punjab is home to nearly 49 million cattle and buffaloes, which collectively generate an estimated 490,000 tonnes of dung every day. Energy experts believe this abundant organic resource can serve as a reliable feedstock for large-scale biogas production, significantly reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

According to official estimates, Punjab has the capacity to produce approximately 7.15 billion cubic metres of biogas annually. Authorities estimate that even harnessing 50 per cent of this available resource could reduce Pakistan’s annual energy import bill by nearly $1.2 billion by replacing imported liquefied natural gas and other fossil fuels with locally produced renewable gas.

Officials maintained that the proposed investment by Pak Suzuki would not only strengthen Punjab’s renewable energy portfolio but also contribute towards improving Pakistan’s energy security at a time when the country continues to face mounting pressure from rising energy import costs and persistent foreign exchange constraints.

They said commercial scale biogas production could emerge as a dependable indigenous source of clean energy capable of supplying Renewable Natural Gas for industrial, commercial and transport sectors while simultaneously reducing the burden on conventional energy infrastructure.

Apart from energy generation, the proposed plants are expected to produce substantial quantities of high quality organic bio-fertiliser, offering farmers an environmentally sustainable alternative to chemical fertilisers and contributing to improved soil health and agricultural productivity.

Officials further noted that scientific processing of livestock manure would significantly reduce methane emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. The initiative is also expected to improve sanitation and environmental conditions around cattle colonies by introducing organised waste collection and treatment systems, thereby mitigating odour, groundwater contamination and other public health concerns associated with improper disposal of animal waste.
