PESHAWAR: A senior lawyer affiliated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Muazzam Butt on Thursday said the ongoing legal dispute over the administrative control of Edwardes College between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi had damaged the institution’s educational standards and reputation.
Speaking at a press conference along with Father Shahid Younis, general secretary of the Diocese of Peshawar, he alleged students were leaving the college and that the institution had also collapsed financially.
He said no principal was willing to continue because anyone taking charge also had to face court proceedings.Muazzam Butt said he had studied at Edwardes College and later became a lawyer. He said his children had also studied there, with one serving in the Pakistan Army and the other working in diplomacy.
He urged the provincial government and governor to end their dispute and hand over all administrative powers of Edwardes College to the church. He said the college not only provided quality education but also promoted religious harmony.
The senior said the standard of education and faculty had declined and that the entire BSc class had ceased to exist. He said the college remained occupied with court cases and students would hesitate to seek admission under such circumstances.He urged the Higher Education Department to play a role in restoring the institution’s reputation and transfer all administrative powers of Edwardes College to the Peshawar Church.
