MIRPUR (AJK): Glowing tributes were paid to young Kashmiri freedom leader Burhan Muzaffar Wani in seminars, public rallies and prayer meetings held in various parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on his 10th martyrdom anniversary.
Speakers at a prayer gathering in Mirpur described Shaheed Wani as a prominent figure in the Kashmir movement and paid tribute to his role. They said his martyrdom had inspired a new generation of Kashmiris to continue the movement.
Representatives of various segments of the civil society and local administration said the best way to honour Shaheed Wani was to continue pursuing what they described as the struggle for the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
They also said the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs, including Burhan Wani, would not go in vain and called upon the international community, particularly the United Nations, to play a more active role in addressing the Kashmir dispute and preventing alleged human rights violations in IIOJ&K.
Burhan Wani, who was 22 at the time of his martyrdom, was regarded by his supporters as an influential figure who used social media to mobilise Kashmiri youth and draw international attention to the Kashmir issue.
He was martyred in an encounter with Indian security forces in the Bamdoora area of Kokernag in south Kashmir on July 8, 2016. Indian authorities had declared him a wanted militant and announced a reward of Rs1 million for information leading to his capture before his death.
Meanwhile, a seminar was jointly sponsored by All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Council (JKLC) at Jammu Kashmir House late Wednesday to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Burhan Wani.
Rich tributes were paid to Shaheed Wani for laying down his life for the liberation of the motherland.The participants also paid homage to the supreme sacrifice of all the martyrs of Jammu and Kashmir.
