ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia on Wednesday praised Pakistan’s leading role in mediating the Islamabad MoU and conveyed appreciation for the efforts for regional peace and security, including through Regional Four (R-4)
Pakistan plays a central diplomatic and mediating role in the R-4 alliance, a strategic coalition comprising Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt.
Nawaf bin Saeed Ahmad Al-Malkiy, Ambassador of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, called on Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar at the Foreign Office.
Remarks by Saudi Arabia on Pakistan’s role came just after US President Trump said in Turkiye the MoU signed with Iran to end the conflict was over but that US representatives would continue to engage with mediators.
The Foreign Office in a statement said the Saudi Ambassador and FM also exchanged views on latest regional developments following signing of the Islamabad MoU. It emphasised advancing collective efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue and diplomacy, while reaffirming commitment to further strengthening Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations.
Meanwhile, at UN General Assembly, Pakistan joined China, Group of 77, OIC and NAM calling for “Necessity of ending economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by United States of America against Cuba”. “Unilateral economic measures, particularly their selective application on developing countries, run counter to those principles. Pakistan shares concerns regarding impact of economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba and its people,” said Asim Iftikhar, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN. “Ending embargo will be an important step to alleviate humanitarian situation, also enabling Cuban people to realise their right to development and prosperity,” Asim Iftikhar added. Pakistan reiterated its commitment to purposes and principles of the UN Charter, especially respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all states. “We underscore imperative of pursuing peaceful means for settlement of disputes, as enshrined in Chapter VI of UN Charter, and in that regard encourage continued dialogue and diplomacy,” added the ambassador.
