The recent attack on the Pakistan Rangers facility in Karachi not only martyred three security personnel but also underscored that terrorist elements are still haunting the country. Despite meaningful and successful steps to improve the security situation, terrorism has once again resurfaced in recent years. The withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan in 2021, followed by the return of the Afghan Taliban to power, altered the regional security environment. To effectively combat terrorism, Pakistan must adopt a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond military operations. Along with intelligence-based operations, the government should strengthen border management, enhance coordination among security agencies and ensure that Afghan territory is not used by terrorist groups against Pakistan.
The use of modern technology and improved intelligence sharing can further strengthen counterterrorism efforts. At the same time, the root causes of terrorism must be addressed. Poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and extremism provide fertile ground for terrorist recruitment and must be countered. Furthermore, the National Action Plan (NAP) should be implemented in its true spirit through strict action against terrorist financing, hate speech and banned organisations. Pakistan should also strengthen regional and international cooperation to counter transnational terrorism.
