ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary to provide the notifications of village and neighbourhood councils of the eight districts before the next hearing fixed for July 28.
The electoral body was also informed that the prime minister has given the “go-ahead” for the signing of the summary related to the local government polls in the Islamabad Capital Territory through circulation.
The ECP heard a case to ensure the holding of local government elections in KP and the capital city of Islamabad. As regards the KP local government case, the KP chief secretary and local government secretary, and the Islamabad chief commissioner appeared before the commission.
The KP chief secretary briefed the ECP bench that the provincial government has already provided the maps of 23 districts to the electoral body and the commission has also completed the work of delimitation in these districts.
However, he noted that in compliance with the order of the commission dated July 1, 2026, the maps of all the remaining 15 districts, including Khyber, Karak, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Bajaur, Paharpur, Mansehra, Chitral Upper, Shangla, Malakand, Kurram, South Waziristan Upper, South Waziristan Lower, Swat and Barswat, have been provided to the ECP. Whereas, he continued, notifications of neighbourhood councils and village councils of seven other districts have also been provided to the ECP, while notifications of village and neighbourhood councils of eight new districts will be provided after the approval of the provincial government.
To this, the ECP directed the chief secretary to provide the notifications of village and neighbourhood councils of the eight districts before the next hearing fixed for July 28 so that the electoral body could start the work of delimitation in all these districts and ensure the timely holding of local government elections in the province.
The Islamabad chief commissioner briefed the ECP that the notification of the boundaries of town corporations and the summary of the notification of the number of union councils in each town corporation had been sent to the PM Office for approval.
The prime minister has approved the cabinet signing of the summary through circulation on July 6. The re-hearing of both these cases will be held on July 28.
