Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday held a virtual review meeting from Karachi with World Bank Country Director Bolormaa Amgaabazar to assess progress in the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP).
The meeting was attended by Sindh Minister for Planning & Development Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Planning & Development Board Chairman Najam Ahmed Shah, Local Government Secretary Waseem Shamshad, Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) CEO Ahmed Siddiqui, KWSSIP Project Director Ayesha Hameed and other senior officials.
The CM and the World Bank country director discussed the implementation status of the KWSSIP-I and progress in the K-IV Augmentation Project. Officials of the water corporation reported progress in providing safe drinking water access to nearly two million people through the expansion of chlorination facilities and improved water quality monitoring systems.
It was said that Karachi’s water and sewerage infrastructure was one of the most critical public service challenges facing the province. The government was committed to completing all reform and development initiatives under the KWSSIP in a transparent and timely manner,” said Murad as he emphasised that improving water supply, sewerage services and institutional efficiency remained a top priority of his government. “Our objective is not merely to construct infrastructure but to create a modern, efficient and financially sustainable water utility that delivers quality services to the people of Karachi,” he said.
The meeting reviewed progress in the 2.7-kilometre common corridor component of the K-IV Augmentation Project. Water corporation officials informed the meeting that work on both the 72-inch and 96-inch diameter pipelines was under way and the project was expected to be completed by August 2026.
The World Bank country director appreciated the Sindh government’s commitment to implementing reforms in Karachi’s water sector and acknowledged the progress made in addressing key project requirements.
The meeting was informed that customer service centres, rehabilitation works in Soba Nagar, metering initiatives and several operational facilities were nearing completion. Reviewing recruitment and institutional strengthening measures, the CM directed officials to expedite hiring of key technical and management staff and complete the induction of members to the KWSC Board.
Concluding the meeting, Murad reiterated the Sindh government’s resolve to transform Karachi’s water and sanitation sector through sustained investment, improved governance and continued collaboration with development partners.
