As a lifelong cricket enthusiast, I fully support Pakistan’s efforts to host international teams and major tournaments. Nevertheless, the security arrangements accompanying these events have become a growing source of frustration for residents of Lahore. Whenever a foreign team arrives, entire neighbourhoods can suddenly find themselves behind barricades. Recently, the touring Australian cricket team visited a recreational facility near my workplace. Within minutes, police personnel had cordoned off the surrounding area, creating significant difficulties for employees, residents and commuters. Pakistan must certainly ensure the safety of its guests. However, the rights and convenience of millions of residents should not become collateral damage in the process. Hosting international cricket should be a celebration, not a recurring civic disruption.
