MANSEHRA: The All Primary Teachers Association (APTA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday announced that it would launch street agitations if the government failed to honour its commitment regarding the upgradation and promotion of teachers in the province.

“Promotion and upgradation are the basic rights of teachers, which have already been accepted by the government during recent talks, but it is still delaying the issuance of a notification,” Sher Afzal Tanoli, the tehsil president of the association in Oghi, told reporters.

He said that APTA, which met in Peshawar last month, had decided to take to the streets for its rights if the government did not honour its commitments.“On the one hand, the government accepts our demands and declares them justified, but at the same time it has been delaying our upgradation and promotions for a long time,” Tanoli said.

He said that the prolonged delay in promotions and upgradation was adversely affecting the teaching community.“The government should also finalise the service structure for the teaching fraternity, giving teachers their due status, which has been denied to them for a long time,” Tanoli went on to add.

The APTA leader said that its central body had held talks with the government and presented its charter of demands.“Since the government has initiated the outsourcing of schools and handed over thousands of educational institutions to private entities, teachers have become insecure about their jobs. The government should address their issues on a priority basis instead of delaying them,” he added.
