LAHORE:The Punjab Assembly has taken a major step towards digitisation by installing modern tablets for lawmakers as part of its initiative to make assembly proceedings completely paperless.

According to the assembly officials, the next session of the Punjab Assembly will be conducted without printed documents, with all agenda papers and parliamentary business being made available to members through tablets installed at their seats. A total of 380 tablets have been provided to the Punjab Assembly under the European Union-funded IP-5 Programme.

Of these, 371 tablets have been installed at members’ desks, three at the seats of assembly officers, and one at the Speaker’s desk. The digital application designed to facilitate paperless proceedings was developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) in consultation with the Law Department and the Assembly’s IT team.

Punjab Assembly Secretary General Chaudhry Aamir Habib said the transition to a paperless system would save millions of rupees currently spent on printing documents. He added that the initiative would also contribute to energy conservation and support green initiatives.

The move is being seen as a significant modernisation effort aimed at improving efficiency, reducing paper consumption, and promoting environmentally sustainable parliamentary practices.
