The traffic police have started issuing e-challans to motorists violating designated lane rules on Sharea Faisal as part of a new lane management plan aimed at improving traffic flow and road safety.
Under the new arrangement, the first and second lanes are reserved for private vehicles, including cars, jeeps and double-cabin vehicles, while the third and fourth lanes are designated for commercial vehicles and motorcycles.
According to the traffic police, motorists found violating the lane rules will face the following fines: Rs2,500 for motorcycles, Rs5,000 for cars and private vehicles, and Rs7,500 for commercial vehicles.
Officials said special enforcement measures have also been introduced against vehicles operating without original number plates as such vehicles are frequently involved in lane violations. Physical checking points have been established at four to five locations along Sharea Faisal. Vehicles found without number plates will be temporarily impounded and issued e-challans in addition to other legal action.
Under the lane management plan, commercial vehicles and motorcycles are required to strictly use the two left-most lanes designated for their movement. Fast-moving private vehicles, including cars, jeeps and double-cabin vehicles, are not permitted to use these lanes for high-speed travel, as they are reserved for slower-moving and commercial traffic. The right-most lane and the second lane from the right have been exclusively allocated for fast-moving private vehicles to ensure smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow.
Traffic police officials also clarified that there were no U-turns or right turns on Sharea Faisal, making it unnecessary for motorcycles or commercial vehicles to travel on the right side.
The authorities also noted that vehicles travelling in the fast lanes and intending to exit towards Shahrah-e-Quaideen or Drigh Road must activate their indicators at least 400 metres before changing lanes and moving towards the designated exit routes.
The traffic police have urged the motorists to follow lane discipline and traffic regulations to avoid penalties and help ensure safer and more efficient traffic movement on one of Karachi’s busiest roads.
