822 women, 48 children in Punjab prisons in drug cases

LAHORE : Official data released by the office of Punjab IG Prisons on Thursday has revealed that a total of 822 women and 48 children are currently lodged in 33 prisons across Punjab in connection with narcotics-related cases.

The information was provided in response to a Right to Information application filed by Advocate Sarmad Ali. According to the data, 621 women and 44 children are under trial, while 201 women and four children have been convicted. The correspondence further disclosed that 18 of the prisoners are identified as drug addicts. Sarmad Ali added that there should a system and mechanism to treat these inmates under the law. Presently, there is no law that says addicted inmates to be treated.
