PESHAWAR: Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has spent Rs1.9 billion on socio-economic development schemes in the project area of the Mohmand Dam Project under Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, a meeting was told on Tuesday.
The meeting was chaired by the additional chief secretary of
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lt (retd) Islam Zeb, and was also attended by MNA Sajid Khan.
General Manager and Project Director Mohmand Dam Project Fasih Ullah Paracha told the meeting held to review development schemes under the project’s CBMs that a total of Rs4.5 billion has been earmarked for 54 development schemes identified by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in consultation with local representatives to improve living conditions in the project area.
So far, he said, 18 schemes have been completed in Phase-I, covering infrastructure development, drinking water supply, health, education, sports and electricity facilities.
The official said that work was in progress on several important projects, including the Abazai-Yousuf Baba Road and a drinking water supply scheme for Sappare Mulagori. The construction of five schools in Mohmand, Bajaur, and Malakand districts is also expected to begin soon.
The schools include Government Primary School Shaheed Banda, Government Girls Primary School Shaheed Banda and Government Primary School Daryab Kor in Pandyali tehsil in Mohmand, Government Girls Primary School Johar in Bajaur and Government Girls Primary School Ghwand in Malakand.
WAPDA is constructing the Mohmand Dam on River Swat with the capacity to store 1.29 million acre-feet of water, generate 800 megawatts of low-cost and environment-friendly electricity, and supply 300 million gallons of water per day to Peshawar for municipal use.
