PESHAWAR: Police have taken a number of measures after an increase in attacks on police and other forces across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a senior official said. “We have held detailed deliberations on the issue and several steps have been taken. Joint action is being carried out by the CTD and police against all identified terrorists and their facilitators on a list developed through joint input,” Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed told The News. He said both offensive and defensive measures were being implemented.
The IGP said all cases were being investigated on a top priority basis and everyone responsible would be taken to task. “All installations have had their defenses strengthened and security measures improved. We will pursue those responsible [for subversive acts] with full force and ensure they are held accountable,” said Zulfiqar Hameed.
A surge in attacks on police, security forces and paramilitary personnel has been witnessed in different parts of KP over the past few days. Security has been upgraded in all affected areas, while operations are being conducted against the attackers.
Terrorist attacks on police and security forces have increased in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in the southern districts of the province, during the holy month of Ramazan.
A number of terrorists were also eliminated in operations in different districts of the province. Several towns in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have remained volatile for almost five years. However, the past few days have witnessed more intense violence.
On Tuesday night, a suicide bomber blew himself up when intercepted by police at the boundary between Dera Ismail Khan and Bhakkar district of Punjab. Three policemen were martyred in the attack.
Earlier on Tuesday in Kohat district, a deputy superintendent of police, along with six others , including police personnel and civilians , was martyred in an attack.
A policeman was martyred in Wana, while a middle school was blown up and torched in Birmal, an area of South Waziristan Lower.
A clash was also reported in the Hassankhel area of Peshawar, where a former policeman was martyred.
A day earlier, a post of the Federal Constabulary was targeted by a quadcopter in nearby Karak district. When the five wounded FC personnel were being shifted to hospital, their ambulances came under attack.
