KHAR: Two people, including a cop, were martyred when militants opened fire on a polio vaccination team in the Tangi area of Salarzai tehsil in Bajaur on the second day of the anti-polio campaign.
According to police, unidentified attackers fired at the team, killing Constable Sajjad Ahmad, who was deployed on security duty.
A local identified as Fazal Hayat, son of Fazal Ameer, attempted to apprehend the attacker, but the gunman opened fire on him as well, resulting in his death.
District Police Officer (DPO), Bajaur, Waqas Rafiq, said a large contingent of the police was dispatched to the area following the incident, and raids were carried out to arrest the suspects.
The funeral prayer of Constable Sajjad Ahmad was offered with full official honours at the Police Lines, Bajaur. The funeral was attended by commandant Bajaur Scouts, Deputy Commissioner Bajaur Shahid Ali, SP Investigation Bajaur Iqbal, senior police and civil officers, local elders and members of civil society.
Later, the body of the fallen constable was sent to his native area under police escort, where he will be laid to rest with full official honours.
