Breaking into the fashion industry is rarely easy and for newcomer Akmal Khan, the journey came with its fair share of challenges. Although acting was always his first passion, modelling eventually became the opportunity that opened doors.

Before entering fashion, Akmal approached several production houses in the hope of becoming an actor but faced repeated rejection. Friends later encouraged him to try modelling, believing he had the right look for it. In 2023, he approached renowned fashion photographer Khawar Riaz, who helped him prepare for the industry through a month-long grooming and fitness programme.

His first portfolio shoot led to campaigns with brands such as Hussain Rehar, Maria B, Gul Ahmed, Aamir Adnan and Nomi Ansari, while his runway debut came at Bridal Couture Week the same year. Akmal continues to build his career under the guidance of stylist Tabesh Khoja. This week he shares his likes and dislikes with our readers…

How did your journey to modelling begin?

It wasn’t a straightforward journey. My family went through a difficult financial period, so I started working when I was in sixth grade as a helper at a local clinic to support them. Later, I worked at a pharmacy under a qualified pharmacist for about a year. Because of our financial situation, I couldn’t continue my education after intermediate. Those experiences taught me resilience, responsibility and the value of hard work. Although life eventually took me into modelling, I still hope to complete my education privately one day.

Was modelling always the plan?

Not really. Acting has always been my dream. Whenever I watch a drama or film, I find myself thinking about how I would perform a scene. I’ve always admired actors like Adnan Siddiqui and imagined myself on screen one day.

Who has been your biggest mentor in the fashion industry?

I’ve been lucky to have two. Khawar Riaz gave me my first big opportunity in Lahore, while Tabesh Khoja has been a constant source of guidance in Karachi. They’ve both played an important role in my journey.

Which project changed your career?

My first portfolio shoot with Khawar Riaz. That’s where everything started for me. It got me noticed and opened doors I never thought possible.

Do you remember your first runway walk?

Very clearly. I was extremely nervous. The rehearsals with Vaneeza Ahmad helped me gain confidence and by the end of the show, I felt like I had finally overcome my fear.

Tell us about your biggest runway mishap.

(Laughs) It happened during the grand finale of TDF 2024. The runway and my shoes were both slippery and I almost fell while turning. Since it was a group finale, I could have knocked everyone behind me over. Thankfully, I managed to regain my balance.

What’s your take on going viral?

These days, visibility matters. Sometimes a campaign goes viral because it gets people talking. If you have the talent to back it up, that kind of attention can create opportunities.

A designer you would love to work with?

Nomi Ansari. I love his menswear, especially his sherwanis and kurtas. His work is detailed, colourful and always stands out.

A model you admire?

Amal Khan and Abeer Asad. They’re both incredibly talented and versatile.

What’s the biggest misconception about modelling?

People think it’s all glamour, but there’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Long hours, multiple outfit changes, staying fit and being patient are all part of the job.

How do you unwind after a long day?

I pray, enjoy a good meal or catch up with a close friend over chai at a dhaba. That’s usually how I like to relax and switch off.

A cause close to your heart?

Tree plantation. Karachi needs more greenery. I’ve planted neem trees in my neighbourhood before and seeing them grow over the years has been really satisfying.

What’s next for you?

I want to keep working hard, take my modelling career to the next level and eventually move into acting. At the same time, I’m excited to explore more international opportunities and see where the journey takes me.
