Dear Ed,

In this week’s Us (August 28 issue), the cover story, ‘The new academic race in Pakistan: engineering, AI and the future of work’, by Muhammad Irtaza, beautifully highlighted the shifting trends in educational fields in Pakistan. I wish this change had come a little earlier, as many students like me who did not want to study medicine would have had the option of choosing fields better suited to their interests and capabilities. The important thing is that there are now viable options for students that will help them find better jobs and contribute to improving the country’s economy. Keep up the good work!

Hello Editor,

I am a new reader and I like Us because it offers interesting articles and stories. I also like the ‘Book Review’ section and hope to read reviews of classics alongside contemporary novels. ‘Poets’ Corner’ is another favourite of mine! I would like to read more stories on sports and new gadgets as well.

An old reader writes…

AoA Ed,

This letter is not just for you but mostly for myself. I was visiting Islamabad and, right outside, in an old bookstore, I found an Us magazine on a dust-covered shelf. I held it in my hand after more than a decade and it took me back to my childhood, when I wrote letters to the editor as an eleven-year-old, trying to change the world with my words. Somewhere along the line, I too got busy with the distractions of late adolescence in this new world and forgot how powerful your words looked in print and could be saved forever.

I was saddened to see how the pages of the magazine have become smaller, words fighting to make space in a world that has become increasingly dependent on borrowed intelligence and unoriginal words. I hope to write more and make this a series, for my sake. And I hope that my words win their fight to occupy their space on this page after a long decade of absence.

Thank you for writing to us, Iman. It is always a pleasure to hear from our old readers. We would be delighted to receive your contributions.
