Spirals are among the oldest and most recognisable patterns in the world. They appear everywhere in nature, from the delicate curves of seashells and blooming flowers to rolling ocean waves. For thousands of years, people have also used the spiral as a powerful symbol. Ancient stone carvings in Ireland and prehistoric pottery found in Thailand feature spiral designs that represent life, growth, change and the endless cycles of nature.
Chinese artist Jiang Miao draws inspiration from these timeless ideas, as well as Eastern philosophy. His latest solo exhibition, Spiral of Energy, explores the connection between life, time and the universe. According to Whitestone Gallery, Miao sees the spiral as a symbol of life's continuous journey, while his bold use of colour reflects invisible energy beyond the physical world.
The exhibition includes several striking series, such as Heavenly Eyes, Mindfulness, Origin and Taoist Trinity and the Self. Each collection explores themes of self-discovery, spiritual awareness and humanity's place in the universe. Some of the circular artworks are enormous, measuring nearly seven feet across.
Miao carefully carves intricate patterns into wooden panels before adding layers of vibrant acrylic paint. The result is a collection of glowing, textured works that invite viewers to pause, reflect and appreciate the beauty of time, nature and the endless cycle of life.
