The Door to Hell has been burning for over 50 years
Hidden in the vast Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan lies one of the world’s most extraordinary sights - the Darvaza Gas Crater, better known as the “Door to Hell.”
The fiery crater is about 70 metres wide and has been burning continuously since 1971, when Soviet engineers accidentally drilled into an underground natural gas cavern. To prevent poisonous methane from escaping, they set the gas alight, expecting the fire to burn out within a few weeks. Instead, it has continued blazing for more than five decades.
Today, the glowing crater attracts adventurous travellers from around the world, especially after sunset when its orange flames illuminate the desert sky. Although it has become one of Turkmenistan’s best-known landmarks, authorities have explored ways to extinguish the fire because of its environmental impact and the release of greenhouse gases. Scientists at an international conference on hydrocarbon development in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat announced that the crater is finally starting to burn out.
Why does time seem to pass faster as we grow older?
Remember how summer holidays felt endless as a child? As we grow older, each year becomes a smaller fraction of our lives, making time seem to pass more quickly. Routine also plays a role. Our brains pay less attention to familiar experiences, causing days and weeks to blur together.

Why do onions make us cry?
When you cut an onion, it releases a natural gas that reacts with the moisture in your eyes to form a mild acid. Your eyes respond by producing tears to wash the irritant away. Chilling onions before cutting them can slow the release of the gas and reduce the tears.
